Resume

Dr. Fabrizio Mattei graduated from the "La Sapienza" University of Rome carrying out an experimental thesis at the "Regina Elena" National Cancer Institute in Rome, where he then specialized in Biotechnological Applications. In these areas he studied the role of the p53 protein and the c-myb oncogene in solid and hematological tumors.

From 1999 to 2000 he worked as Visiting Investigator at the Edward Jenner Institute for Vaccine Research in the laboratory of Dr. David Tough (Newbury, UK), where he studied the role of IL-15 and Type I Interferons in dendritic cells. These researches were then directed towards the study of tumors, melanoma in particular. Subsequently, dr. Mattei has deepened his research on the role of Type I Interferons in anti-tumor combinatorial therapies, and has demonstrated the decisive role of IRF-8 in various aspects of immunity and in the functionality of the antitumor response.

Through the conduct of an Ordinary Finalized Research Project funded by the Ministry of Health from 2014 to 2018, Dr. Mattei's Group was among the first to propose, in the ISS and at international level, the study of the interactions between the Immune System and tumors through the use of microfluidic devices, in collaboration with the CNR. These studies were disclosed by the well-known national information column Superquark, conducted by Piero Angela and by a publication in the journal Science. Recently, Dr. Mattei deals with deciphering the role of the IL-33 / ST2 axis in the activation of granulocytes in the antitumor response. These research activities have been disseminated through publications, invitations to workshops, seminars and conferences, as well as through the organization of conferences and teaching positions in professional training courses for doctors and biologists.

Dr. Mattei has been in charge of evaluating various research projects on behalf of national (MIUR, Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca) and international institutions and is a member of international scientific societies specialized in the field of onco-immunology.

He is also an Editorial Board Member of several international scientific journals specializing in cancer and immunology, including Frontiers in Oncology, Frontiers in Immunology, Oncoimmunology. He aactually serves as Lead Guest Editor for a Research Topic on Advanced models for oncoimmunology approaches to be published in the journal Frontiers in Immunology. Fabrizio Mattei also conducts reviewer activities for disparate international journals, such as Cancer Research, Seminars in Immunology and other top journal in the field of immuno-oncology. In July 14, 2022, Dr. Mattei Has been co-Founder of the Italian Society for Organs-on-Chip (SIOoC).

In November 28-29, 2022 Dr. Mattei has recently been scientific coordinator of a successful two days international workshop focused on immuno-oncology aspects in biomedical research.
